So what do you do when it appears someone wants to be your Bus Buddy???? And even more importantly.. what do you do when that Bus Buddy is more than a little odd??? Just how much information is revealed between the two of you??? Just how much do you reveal to this person with whom you spend no more that 5 or 10 minutes a day?
Yes... I have a Bus Buddy... at least... someone is trying to be my Bus Buddy. Aside from the fact that I wear my headphones and read a book whilst waiting for the bus and riding on the bus... someone is trying to make friends with me... and that person is.. indeed... rather odd.
Just how far do you go with your Bus Buddy? It started with a polite smile and nod in the mornings and is in danger of developing into... dare I say it... seat sharing.
What am I meant to do? Is there some kind of code or protocol? Am I obliged to say hello everyday or only on occasions when she cathes my eye?? If the BB hasn't arrived by the time the Bus has pulled in am I meant to ask the driver to wait??? How many long and happy friendships have been formed at "The Bus Stop"? And am I going to join the ranks? I am fully aware that Mother has many Bus Buddies.. and socialises with them as well as just riding the bus with them.
My Bus Buddy lives round the corner from me.. I've never seen her socialy.. in fact... away from the bus stop.. I don't even think that I would recognise her. We generaly only exchange "Good Mornings" but today... because the bus was packed... she shuffled over and invited me to sit next to her and then proceeded to yap my ear off the whole of the journey (despite G Love and Special Sauce blasting in my ears....).
What am I to do??? She told me all about her two children and how she has recently married her partner of 9 years. She told me all about her summer vacation to Turkey... she told me about her mothers breast cancer and her daughters adenoids problem and finally.. when she asked me a direct question about what my summer vacation plans were I stalled... I tripped over my own tongue and suddenly started having visions of her robbing my house whilst we are away on Cyprus. Is she some secret nomark who gathers information to pass on to ne'er do wells so that empty houses can be robbed whilst the innocent victims are hard at work on the beach or at their offices?? Huh?? Huh???
You thought catching the bus was simple didn't you? What happenes if I see her when I am in the car.. (ok ok.. I haven't got a car anymore but yanno...) Am I meant to stop and offer her a lift? When she asked where I worked and I replied "In the city" was I being rude because I didn't tell her directly?
I'm telling you.. this catching the bus lark isn't as easy as you think yanno... its a minefield of Bus Politics.... |
